Long time since I,ve posted any stuff on this blog but now winter is here I will be back.

BRITISH LONGBOARD ROUND 4

Bude surfer do well at last round of BLU 4

Report on Yesterdays competition Round 4 of the BLU,Held at Gwithian.

The surf was less than a foot all day so made riding waves and scoring near impossible but tha
t

 did not stop JOLLY ROGER Bude team  riders from performing well.

 We will start with Lewis Stritch. He was drawn in the 1st round against Ben Skinner and GB

 rider Alex Madocks Not a nice draw for young Lewis but he worked hard paddling up and

down the beach to find waves this tactic work as he qualified for the next round . Now if you

 thought his 1st round was loaded then you should have seen his next round Current leader. last

 years champ and ex world series rider Guts Griffiths . needless to say lewis did not make the

 final. Lewis end of year ranking (needs to be confirmed) but I know it's in the top 10.

Steve Stritch Nothing quiet so glamorous came 4th in the final (Grand MasterDivision) But this

 did mean that Steve's Final ranking for the year is 4th in that division.

Emily (dad drive faster) Currie . Emily was in 3 competitions yesterday 2 at Gwithian and 1 in

 Newquay So Paul drove Emily back and two all day between heats and finals . I'm don't Know

 the details of the short board comp at Newquay other than in the Final she was 10 mins late but 

finished 3rd, whilst back at Gwithhin Emily made it through to the final of Under 18's girls and 

Open Ladies final. Emily won the under 18s Girls and came 3rd in the Open Ladies (which she

 arrived 5 mins late for). Final end of year position for Emily Open Ladies 4th. Under 18's Girls 

1st. So all in all a good day and season for the Bude longboarders.

 Next Competition is the 

Jesus Longboard at Polzeath on the 6th / 7th Oct . come along and support them.

BSKYB.

I need to put out a  BIG Thankyou To all the boys and girls involved with a project run at Budehaven school Cornwall in conjunction with BSKYB . Over the last 20 or so weeks Mr M Reay myself have been working with children from the school to teach them water safety Skills.With the aim to run a water festival on Summerleaze beach. This took place last month to link up with the Olympic celebration between the school and primary schools in the Bude area. Which was a great success.
Well yesterday as a reward to the boys and girls we took them for a surf lesson. Before we hit the surf the boys and girls brought out this surf board (picture above) They had been secretly working on this board with local shaper Jolly Roger and presented me with this board as a big thankyou for all i had done to help them.
For once I was lost for words.
Once again BSKYB crew a big Thankyou.

This guy is so inspiring .Born in 1955 he still charges .side slipping his long board whilst noes riding in the tube would be a feat for any younger longboarder. watch and see if you get the same enjoyment i got from watching this clip.

stylemasters

last week end I went up to Saunton to compete in the Stylemasters where you get to ride longboards from the early 60's
I took Emily Currie who came 2nd in the open ladies . well done young Lady.
How did I get on well lets say in my heat i came up against Kenno who won last years BLU and the other competitor in my heat won the competition so lets say i had a good week end.

surf sunday

Well not surfed this week. BUT Sunday looks like we could have so nice surf. Winds are a little onshore but everything else looks good . Going to check out Bude but if the rips are still spoiling the wave then its off to Widdy.
I have had a little whisper that the car parks in Bude might be free for the first 2 hours to encourage people to come to the town . Hope they extend that to widdy carpark.

I can remember surfing back in North Wales in March in a pair of speedos

 I might put picture on one day.

Yesterday I was out surfing and was watching Heidi from big Blue surf school surfing and got to thinking I've not featured any female surfing , so guys this is easy on the eyes and ladies this proves you can and should surf more.

Spot M ( first surf)

Might not be a big deal to a lot of you but I got surf Spot M nr Bude. Its a wave I have seen break for over 10 years ( when I was a holiday maker before I moved to Bude) I have seen it in Magazines but never thought I would ever get good enough to surf it . Well the day arrived. got my 9 ft Roger Tout board of the roof got changed no backing out now . Walk down to the  waters edge and encounter the first peril getting in across the rocks and passed the shore break. Wait, wait then there's a gap in the waves Go paddle for all your worth passed the shorebreak. made it still got board in one piece plus a added bonus of dry hair.now the long paddle out to the peak.  I sit on the shoulder of the wave for about 10 mins watching it , looking where the rocks are where the wave sections.. I  then moved closer to the peak and waited my turn, then its my turn  about a 5 foot wave , Paddle pop up take the drop made it then the section in front closds out BAIL.  Pull on lease get on the board quick and paddle into the channel before getting caught on the inside. Phew made my first wave , not much of a ride but I did it. Paddle back to the peak and wait.
 Here we go again jump to feet check behind me oh no Matt White taken of so deep he's in the white water coming screaming along the wave on his boggie board I don't think he will be to happy at a longboard dropping in on him head for shoulder and get out the way. Guess what? I did not make it got wiped out good style. get on board and once again paddle like mad for the channel. Matt comes paddling pass laughing his head off. "great wipeout Steve" "cheers Matt"
Yeap you've guessed it back to the peak and wait again,. at last a empty wave paddle , pop up , make the drop . At last I am surfing the wave I have wanted to surf for so long. When you watch from the shore you don't realize how close to the rocks you get on your bottom turns or how steep the take of is. I stayed out for another 4 waves cause the rides are so long and that makes it a long paddle back.. 
I total respect the guys /girls who go out on big days because today was nowhere near a big day but what a surf.I had 
What made this surf even more than special was Lewis ( my son)  was with me

My son has broke yet another board. He always says he wants to keep the broken boards and I was thinking  how can I display them. That's when I came up with making a chair out of reclaimed wood and the surfboard as the back.

Here in Bude we had surf that is either really nice or a total waste of time where ever you are in the world I hope your able to get in more than us here in Bude. Because of the poor surf I have once again been searching the net for unusual videos here is a very good filmed video .

The surf is good today and really could do with a surf.

4 hours surf?

Really tired now just got out after a 4 hrs surf. Waves when big. but just nice to be in the water.
got in at 07.20 and was the only one in for over an hour. Although I was joined by a very big seal who came within 5 mts of me. I think he thought i was a mate for him. anyway after about 10 mins he swam off leaving me to carry on surfing. finally got out at 12.00 one happy cookie.

WAVES ?

Well the days are getting longer, I need to look on the bright side because the surf just has not been good for a long time. It makes me want to take up knitting. Well may be not that extreme , but I bet we are all feeling the same .
SO to try and help cheers us all up I've found a short [6min ] video of some longboard surfing in Brazil.

wave garden for Bristol?

The first public artificial wave park facility built by Wavegarden will open in the Basque Country, in Spring of 2012. This is the surf park in which the brand has tested the concept and model. The team of entrepreneurs has accelerated the construction of a public surf pool for all levels of surfing, after the announcement of the British instalment of Wavegarden, scheduled for Spring 2013, in Bristol.

First frost

Just a heads up , 1st frost of the year down here in Bude.But lovely blue sky and a 1/2 decent wave. Well I'm surfing later.

Water Temp????????????

   

I don't know if it's because I'm  Welsh. or winter wetsuits are getting better (mines 3 years old) or global  warming. but the sea temperature around Bude (UK) is warm . For this time of the year still at 10 degrees centigrade

I'm still without gloves and still yet to get icream head.

 I was talking to local lad Jobe and he  was in a summer suit.last night.

.Although the sea has been warmer we have not had the quality winter swells.I,m all up for colder sea temperatures  and better swells.

Lets hope this weekends  swell is as good as predicted

.Have a good one where ever you are and what ever you do.
